Do Peptide Lip Treatments Really Work?

Peptides are the buzziest ingredient in lip care, promising better lip hydration, smoothness, and fullness. But do peptide lip treatments actually work?

Peptides are short chains of amino acids that serve as the building blocks of proteins like collagen and elastin. They have been used in skincare to support the natural repair processes and enhance texture—and they work just as well in lip products, experts say.

Peptide-infused products can hydrate your lips while reducing the appearance of fine lines, said Jeannette Graf, MD, a board-certified dermatologist and clinical assistant professor of dermatology at Mount Sinai School of Medicine.

Unlike traditional moisturizers, peptides’ hydrating effect doesn’t come from sealing in moisture.

“Instead, peptides help strengthen the skin barrier, improving its ability to retain hydration and preventing moisture loss,” Graf told Verywell.

How Do Peptide Lip Treatments Work?

A 2023 study evaluated a facial serum containing neuropeptides, proteins, amino acids, and marine extract. Older adults who used the serum over a three-month period experienced increased skin hydration, smoothness, and tightening, including in the lip area.

Your lips might also appear fuller when using peptides. “Since some peptides stimulate collagen production, they may contribute to a plumper appearance over time,” said Hannah Kopelman, MD, a dermatologist in private practice at Kopelman Hair Restoration.

“While peptides do not provide an immediate plumping effect like irritants such as cinnamon or menthol, they work at a deeper level to reinforce the skin’s natural barrier, leading to healthier, more resilient lips in the long run,” she added.

Indeed, one small study found that using a peptide and hyaluronic acid-based lip treatment twice daily was linked to a 1.3% increase in lip surface area in the hour after treatment and a 25.6% increase in lip elasticity.

However, it’s important to note that the peptide lip treatment used in the study—and many others—is formulated with other hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid and ceramides, which can amplify moisturization, Kopelman said.

Are Lip Peptides Safe?

Peptides are generally low-risk and safe for lips and skin. But it’s also important to consider the other lip treatment ingredients. Some products may contain preservatives, fragrances, or other additives that could cause irritation, said Kopelman.

Parabens, isothiazolinones, and iodopropynyl butyl carbamate are a few common ingredients to look out for that may have this effect.

“If you have very sensitive skin, it’s always a good idea to patch-test a new product on a small surface area of your skin before applying it to your lips,” said Graf.

Are There Better Alternatives to Peptides?

Though peptide lip treatments can be a good addition to your skincare routine, it depends on what you want to achieve.

If your goal is hydration, Kopelman recommends occlusive products that include ingredients like lanolin, petrolatum, and beeswax, like Aquaphor and Vaseline. These help prevent moisture loss and relieve dry or chapped lips.

Graf said you could also combine peptides with other ingredients to get that hydration. “Pairing peptides with hyaluronic acid or ceramides can be even more effective for an extra hydration boost.” If your goal is plumper lips, look for products that combine peptides with nourishing oils or shea butter.

What This Means For You

Peptide lip treatments are popular for their hydrating, smoothing, and plumping effects. But it’s important to recognize that while the trendy ingredient can provide these benefits, it’s not a fix-all for lip dryness or irritation. If you’re looking for quick hydration or elasticity, products with occlusive agents (like petrolatum and beeswax) or hyaluronic acid might be more effective.
