UC San Diego Health Pioneers World’s First Custom-Fit Spine Surgery

In an innovative stride for spinal health, UC San Diego Health has claimed the world-first title by performing a custom-fit anterior cervical spine surgery tailored to a patient’s unique anatomy. In a July operation, the medical team, led by Dr. Joseph Osorio of UC San Diego School of Medicine, executed an anterior cervical procedure, traditionally involving an incision in the front of the neck to remove a damaged disc and fuse the vertebrae. In a groundbreaking shift, this surgery utilizes a personalized implant rather than a standard one-size-fits-all device, potentially transforming postoperative recovery and long-term outcomes.

The procedure taps into a blend of high-resolution imaging, artificial intelligence, and 3D printing to precisely measure the spine and create a bespoke implant from medical-grade titanium, as detailed by UC San Diego Health News. “Every spine is unique, just like a fingerprint,” Osorio explained, underscoring the significance of individualizing medical devices to adapt to a patient’s anatomy seamlessly. With the history of anterior cervical fusion stretching back to the 1950s, the surgery at UC San Diego Health marks a significant departure from the norm.

Although anterior cervical procedures are common, standard implants can lead to issues affecting spinal alignment and mobility. Using 3D-printed custom implants, designed with AI-assisted planning, is expected to mitigate complications, hasten recovery, and reduce the need for further surgeries. Dr. Osorio, speaking on the impact of the custom implant technologies, told UC San Diego Health News, “It’s a fundamental shift in how we approach complex spine surgery.”

Anticipating a broader revolution in personalized medicine, UC San Diego Health continues to raise the bar in neurosurgical innovation. Having already secured a spot in the recent U.S. News & World Report “Best Hospitals” rankings for their neurology and neurosurgery program, the health system boasts a Joint Commission-accredited spine program leveraging the expertise of neurosurgeons, orthopedic surgeons, rehabilitation specialists, and pain management experts. Dr. Alexander Khalessi, chair of the Department of Neurosurgery, commented via the UC San Diego Health News, “This milestone brings the promise of personalized medicine to spine surgery,” outlining the health system’s commitment to restoring patient function through state-of-the-art device innovation and surgical precision.
