CHARLOTTE, N.C. — On the show we learned ways to protect our skin throughout the summer.
While your soul might be loving the summer vibes, your skin might not be having quite as much fun.
Sunburns. Peeling. Early wrinkles. And yes, even long-term sun damage.
To help us enjoy the sunshine without sacrificing your skin, we got advice from Dr. Elizabeth Rostan of Charlotte Skin and Laser, who joined us on Charlotte Today to share exactly how to keep your skin protected, healthy, and glowing all season long.
One of the top things to remember: sunscreen isn’t just for beach days—it should be part of your everyday skincare routine, rain or shine.
Here’s what to look for:
-
SPF 30 or higher
-
Broad-spectrum protection (that means UVA + UVB coverage)
-
Water-resistant, if you’re sweating or swimming
And yes, you need more than a tiny dab.
➡️ Use about a nickel-sized amount for your face and a shot-glass-sized amount for your body.
➡️ Reapply every two hours, especially after swimming or sweating.
Mineral vs. Chemical sunscreen:
Mineral (physical) sunscreens contain zinc oxide or titanium dioxide and sit on top of your skin to reflect rays. Great for sensitive skin.
Chemical sunscreens absorb UV rays and often go on more sheer.
💡 Pro tip: Don’t forget often-missed spots like your ears, the back of your neck, the tops of your feet, and your scalp line.
Sunscreen isn’t your only option. Dr. Rostan recommends adding a second layer of defense with sun-protective clothing.
-
UPF-rated clothing (look for UPF 50+ for best protection)
-
Wide-brim hats to shade your face, ears, and neck
-
UV-protective sunglasses to shield your eyes and the delicate skin around them
Bonus: These pieces are lightweight, breathable, and now come in super-stylish options—so you don’t have to sacrifice fashion for function.
Beyond what you wear, how you behave in the sun plays a big role in your skin’s health. Here are Dr. Rostan’s top behavior-based tips:
-
☀️ Seek shade between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. when the sun’s rays are strongest.
-
🚫 Skip the tanning beds—they increase your risk of skin cancer and accelerate aging.
-
💧 Stay hydrated—healthy skin starts from within.
-
🧴 Moisturize after sun exposure to repair and replenish. Look for ingredients like aloe vera, ceramides, and hyaluronic acid.
-
👀 Get an annual skin check from a dermatologist—and do monthly self-checks at home for any new or changing spots.
