Opelousas General ranks among top Louisiana hospitals in Newsweek report | Health

OPELOUSAS, La. (NEWS 15) — Opelousas General Health System is once again being recognized among the top hospitals in Louisiana.

Newsweek and global data firm Statista recently released their America’s Best-in-State Hospitals 2026 rankings, highlighting leading hospitals in every state and the District of Columbia. Among Louisiana hospitals with 100 to 250 beds, Opelousas General Health System ranked fourth statewide, placing it among the highest-performing facilities of similar size.

The annual list honors 800 hospitals nationwide, expanding from 700 hospitals recognized in 2025.

“We are thrilled to be on Newsweek’s list of Best-in-State hospitals again this year,” OGHS President and CEO Lance Armentor, BSM, MHA, said. “Our team works intentionally and collaboratively to provide high-quality healthcare at Opelousas General Health System. This recognition reflects the hard work and dedication of our physicians, nurses, and staff.”

Newsweek officials noted several updates to this year’s methodology, including expanded hospital quality metrics, broader accreditation coverage, and the incorporation of expert recommendations from prior years. The 2026 rankings also place a stronger emphasis on care quality and patient-reported outcomes.

Quality data was compiled from multiple sources, including the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, Medicare Fee-for-Service claims via Arcadia, and the American Hospital Association Annual Survey, which now includes staffing metrics. Accreditation data was also considered from organizations such as The Joint Commission, Planetree, ACHC, and the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program.

Hospital reputation scores were shaped by a nationwide survey of medical professionals, who evaluated facilities based on care quality, counseling, amenities, staffing, and accessibility. Patient experience was measured using HCAHPS survey results.

Overall rankings were calculated using four weighted categories: hospital quality metrics (50%), hospital reputation (30%), patient experience (15%), and the implementation of Patient-Reported Outcome Measures, or PROMs (5%). PROMs are standardized questionnaires completed by patients to assess their functional well-being and overall quality of life.
