NASA plant stem cell technology to be used for skin care line
A Naples Soap Co. anti-aging skin care line launching next year will utilize NASA 3D biometric technology as part of an effort to lead the commercialization of space-age cellular science for personal care products.
Working with a Florida manufacturer, Naples Soap will use ingredients generated from 3D plant stem cells grown in a NASA-designed zero-gravity bioreactor in Florida.
“The proprietary complex in development combines 33 different components to nourish the skin, such as different forms of hyaluronic acid, vital nutrients, amino acids and proteins including collagen and cytokines–growth factors that stimulate cell growth and tissue repair–cultured in a zero-gravity bioreactor to deliver clinically proven superior results compared to current anti-aging skincare products using 2D plant stem cells,” company officials said.
CEO Deanna Wallin said the company has been working on the new line since the beginning of this year and expects to launch it in the middle to the end of the first quarter in 2025.
“NASA has a lot of programs with the public and with business entities to try to allow businesses, through various certification processes, to bring their technology to the public, which is really exciting,” Wallin said. “It’s not just that they’re spending the money and creating the technology and then it just gets disregarded. They have relationships and partnerships and opportunities for private companies.”
She said the exciting thing for her about the science behind the new formulas is the level of results being seen in clinical studies.
“We’re already having really good luck with utilizing 2D stem cells in our Vitamin C Plant Stem Cell Hydra Gel, and that product has developed a cult following,” Wallin said. “With the 3D stem cells, what excites me is the level of efficacy that we’re seeing from clinical studies. That’s really the exciting part: That you’re going to see visible results and you’re going to see them quickly.
“Our customers know that when they use the product, their skin is going to improve, so [it’s exciting] just being able to stand behind some really cutting-edge technology knowing that it’s going to make a difference for people. We’ve always been focused on eczema and psoriasis, but these products, the products that we’re creating in this biometric reactor, they have such incredible healing properties for the skin.”
Wallin said the new line will consist of six to eight products, primarily for face care, “because the anti-aging aspect of the products is phenomenal.”
“The reduction in wrinkles is significant, and also [under-eye] dark circles, and significant increased hydration,” she said. “So, that really is primarily for anti-aging for the face, but there are things that the product works on with the whole body. We’re creating a propriety blend just for Naples Soap Company, and we’re in the trademark process now… This is a fantastic opportunity to treat the face and the body, but we’ll launch face first.”
She noted the new products, like all from Naples Soap, are designed to be unisex, with no separate lines for men and women.
“All of our products are unisex; it really just depends on fragrance,” Wallin said. “These [the new line of products] will be fragrance-free because the base formulas will be as natural as possible. But in any of our 600 branded products that we have currently, it really is about fragrance. We have Florida Fresh, which is a really nice uplifting citrus. And we have Karma, which is a little darker, a little bit more musky and slightly more masculine, but quite frankly, so many of our male clients are huge fans of lavender. It’s just a very clean and therapeutic scent.
“We really haven’t geared toward male or female product lines because we try to create products for everyone.”
Naples Soap’s personal care products are sold at the company’s 13 retail locations in Florida, online, through other direct-to-consumer channels and in more than 300 boutiques, spas and stores throughout the U.S.
